How to prepare yerba mate: water, temperature and steps
Prepare four essentials
You need yerba mate, a cup, a bombilla and water. A thermos is practical for refilling but is optional for your first try. These steps follow the traditional preparation described by Argentina’s INYM institute; also check the instructions on your chosen yerba’s packaging.

1. Add the yerba
Fill the cup roughly three quarters full. Cover the opening with your palm, carefully turn the cup over and shake it briefly. Return it at an angle so the yerba slopes to one side, leaving a lower space on the other.
2. Add a little lukewarm water
Pour a small amount of lukewarm water into the lower side. Wait a few moments for the bottom layer to become moist.
3. Position the bombilla
Place the filter in the moist area and rest the bombilla against the side of the cup. Once positioned, try not to move it or use it for stirring.
4. Top up with hot water
INYM specifies water at around 75–80 °C for this preparation. Add small amounts where the bombilla sits. You do not need to wet the entire surface of the yerba at once.
5. Drink and refill
After drinking, add water to the same spot. Repeat the process; a refill does not mean you need to replace all the yerba each time.
Your first try is not an exam. Pay attention to the sequence and follow the instructions for your product. Routine comes with repetition.

Three habits that make the biggest difference
Do not pour freshly boiling water. Do not stir with the bombilla once it is in place. Do not wet the entire surface on the first pour. Keeping these three steps consistent makes the next preparation easier to compare. A thermometer is useful while learning to judge water temperature.
Frequently asked questions
How many refills will one portion give?
There is no single number for every product and portion. Refill while you enjoy the taste, then replace the used yerba.
Is a flask essential?
No. It makes repeated refilling convenient, but you can begin with a suitable jug or another source of warm water.
